Next Best Thing to Disneyland

Long story short. We had a trip planned to Disneyland with my parents, my sister's family and her in-laws. Day on my aunt and uncles yacht they just built, day at the beach, day with friends and of course Disneyland fun. Scott came home from school Friday morning with a fever. That night when we were getting ready to go, he didn't want to go. You know a kid is sick when they don't want to go to Disneyland. Luckily, my parents were about 10 minutes away and we called them to pick up Tyler with plans to meet up with them the next day if Scott was feeling better. He was still kind of sick and didn't want to have a miserable 6 hour car ride, so decided on the next best thing....Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Don't laugh, it was fun. We let Scott choose where he wanted to go and so off we went.

Scott and Danny went on a lot of rides. Scott's favorite was this indoor ferris wheel that spins. He went on bumper cars and was so focused on staying close to his dad. It was pretty funny and very cute. Kira even got to go along for some rides. It was a lot of fun. It was so great having time with just Scott. Kira doesn't really count because she is so young and soo easy.

When the boys were done with rides, we went to the car to get out their toys and played at the beach for 2 hours. My favorite part was watching Scott and Danny ride rides and collecting sea shells with Scott. We went up and down the beach looking for cool rocks, shells and mullusks.

It was a fun family day! One we should do more often since it is so convenient and fun.

Poor Scott! But hey I have fond childhood memories of Santa Cruz beachboard walk. I believe several include you and jellyfish.

My mom is in town from Utah. She spent the night at the hospital last night and has been holding Tyler quite a bit. He really enjoys being held, so he's less fussy and has responded well to the weaning of the oxygen. He's on regular air, but I guess it's still the high-flow to keep his lungs inflated. He's up to 9 cc's of food per hour, an improvement over yesterday's 2 cc's. The picture is of Betty and Bob Maddox (Heather's in-laws), Jacquie Lietz (Heidi's mom), Heather Maddox (Heidi's sister), and Walt Lietz, Heidi's dad. They did a 5K walk to raise money for the American Heart Association. Thanks to all who donated on behalf of Heather and Tyler!

Periacetabular Osteotomy "Hip" Surgery

Ok, should we just rename our blog the McMillan Pediatrics Medical Journal? Everyone has issues. Our family is congenital medical disorders. Tylers heart, Carls brain and Dannys Hips. Danny had hip discomfort growing up, visited the doc at 17 and was dismissed with "bad hips." He learned to make the best of his hips by monitoring his activity, walking slowly, making me wear hiking packs and taking breaks. After experiencing back pain this year he went to a doctor who took one look at his x-ray and sent him to orthopedics who sent him to a surgeon. We are blessed with a great friend who is amazing hip surgeon and chief of orthopedics AKA John Kronick who guided us in our decision. Our family is always taken care of in miraculous ways. Here are his hips: The Problem: acetabular (hip) dysplasia is a congenital disorder usually formed by age 3. His acetabular is more dish shaped instead of cup shaped.
