Surgery

We got there at 10:30, they started the actually surgery at 2:00 and he was out about 6 hours later at 8:00. We finally saw Danny at 10:00 in his room. The surgery went well. They cut the acetabular, had to shave his femor because it was really rough. Overall, he had minimal bleeding and they didn't need to transfuse him. He was in good spirits before and after the surgery and said that he didn't feel much pain. He has an epidural and will try to get up today. I was so proud of how nice he was to everyone and how relaxed he appeared. They accidentally cut a nerve which gives his skin sensation. They tried to repair it, but are unsure if he will regain feeling in the upper part of his leg. We are expecting to be in the hospital 3-5 days so will be home probably Saturday or Sunday for a couple month recovery. It feels good to have the surgery behind us and move forward to rehab and recovery. Glen, Danny's dad came to town for 3 days which is really nice. We have photos that we will post and will continue to keep you updated. He is at Kaiser Oakland if anyone works in Oakland and wants to visit.

We are glad to hear that everything went well. I'd expect nothing less then Danny with a positive attitude. Let me know if there is anything we can do.

Yeah Danny made it through!!! He is on his way to being a bionic man! We missed seeing you this week in our pool, maybe when you're feeling up to it you'll be over. I'll be sure to have crystal light and oreos for you! Happy recovery!

It was so good to see you both today at the hospital. It was hard for me to see Danny in pain, but his spirits seemed great. Hang in there and hopefully things will start getting better little by little. We love you both and are here to support you in whatever way we can help. Hope this afternoon went better.

he'll be skipping around in now time. McMillan Men are hardy and have such a good temperament!! I've been there and know it's a road filled with ups and downs...mostly ups. He will love his new hip, I just know it. :) Best wishes to you call, and a speedy recovery.

My mom is in town from Utah. She spent the night at the hospital last night and has been holding Tyler quite a bit. He really enjoys being held, so he's less fussy and has responded well to the weaning of the oxygen. He's on regular air, but I guess it's still the high-flow to keep his lungs inflated. He's up to 9 cc's of food per hour, an improvement over yesterday's 2 cc's. The picture is of Betty and Bob Maddox (Heather's in-laws), Jacquie Lietz (Heidi's mom), Heather Maddox (Heidi's sister), and Walt Lietz, Heidi's dad. They did a 5K walk to raise money for the American Heart Association. Thanks to all who donated on behalf of Heather and Tyler!

Periacetabular Osteotomy "Hip" Surgery

Ok, should we just rename our blog the McMillan Pediatrics Medical Journal? Everyone has issues. Our family is congenital medical disorders. Tylers heart, Carls brain and Dannys Hips. Danny had hip discomfort growing up, visited the doc at 17 and was dismissed with "bad hips." He learned to make the best of his hips by monitoring his activity, walking slowly, making me wear hiking packs and taking breaks. After experiencing back pain this year he went to a doctor who took one look at his x-ray and sent him to orthopedics who sent him to a surgeon. We are blessed with a great friend who is amazing hip surgeon and chief of orthopedics AKA John Kronick who guided us in our decision. Our family is always taken care of in miraculous ways. Here are his hips: The Problem: acetabular (hip) dysplasia is a congenital disorder usually formed by age 3. His acetabular is more dish shaped instead of cup shaped.
