Kira has the best group of middle school girls. Julianna and Georgia couldn't make it today for the mini meet but these girls taught the next generation of kermits to swim. 4 weeks ago these kids could barely make it to the flags and by the end of 4 weeks they are swimming across the pool. I am so proud of them and so proud of our instructors who are so good with teaching little kids how to swim. When I first started coaching, our kermit program consisted of older kids who were doing it for a cheap lesson program. We changed a few things to make sure that kids were cabana members and were indeed interested in swim team. We also started gearing it towards younger kids, primarily 6&Under which takes a little more skill and attention to teach since they aren't as strong, but each year the program got better.
This was my first year that we were at capacity for kermits which was so hard. Every year I learn one more thing I need to improve and next year I am going to spend a little more time with evaluations to make it more fair for the kids and hopefully add a lesson component to get kids familiar with the water before evaluations begin which makes it so much easier to see who is emotionally and physically ready to bridge from a learn to swim to swim team setting. Overall, so proud of these kids!
